This paper presents a new approach to model the motorcycle tires geometry with a multibody code. Each tire is modelled, from a kinematical point of view, with a subsystem constituted of two joined links. The subsystem allows to locate the theoretical contact point between tire and road, for every wheel attitude, to apply the tire-road interaction as contemplated in the Pacejka “magic formula”. This wheel submodel is implemented in a complete motorcycle multibody model to evaluate the kinematic and dynamic motorcycle behaviour, for different tire profiles.

Abstract

This paper presents a new approach to model the motorcycle tires geometry with a multibody code. Each tire is modelled, from a kinematical point of view, with a subsystem constituted of two joined links. The subsystem allows to locate the theoretical contact point between tire and road, for every wheel attitude, to apply the tire-road interaction as contemplated in the Pacejka “magic formula”. This wheel submodel is implemented in a complete motorcycle multibody model to evaluate the kinematic and dynamic motorcycle behaviour, for different tire profiles.
