Praising virtue: Leone Allacci’s unpublished work on Aristotle’s Hymn to virtue

This article presents and discusses the contents of cod. V of the collection Carte Allacci of the Biblioteca Vallicelliana in Rome, i.e. unpublished philological material by Leone Allacci (1588ca.-1669) on Aristotle’s Hymn to virtue. After a brief presentation of the history of the collection and the manuscript, the article analyzes Allacci’s works as found in cod. V: a copy of the Greek text of the hymn and its Latin translation by Allacci; the dedication letter written by Allacci to Agostino Favoriti (1624-1682); Allacci’s ample Latin commentary. Appendix I provides a detailed list of the contents of cod. V. Appendix II provides a complete overview of the contents of each lemma of Allacci’s commentary.
