This essay considers the hypothesis that Schiller’s Entgötterte Natur is the primary source of Weber’s concept of “disenchantment of the world”, as well as the well-founded objections that have been raised against this hypothesis in Weberforschung. After examining the hypothesis, the essay analyses the presence of Schiller in Weber’s writing by reviewing the few explicit references to the German poet in the volumes of the Gesamtausgabe. While this analysis cannot replace interpretation, it may provide a more solid basis for future discussions on the relationship between Schiller and Weber.

Abstract

This essay considers the hypothesis that Schiller’s Entgötterte Natur is the primary source of Weber’s concept of “disenchantment of the world”, as well as the well-founded objections that have been raised against this hypothesis in Weberforschung. After examining the hypothesis, the essay analyses the presence of Schiller in Weber’s writing by reviewing the few explicit references to the German poet in the volumes of the Gesamtausgabe. While this analysis cannot replace interpretation, it may provide a more solid basis for future discussions on the relationship between Schiller and Weber.
