This essay analyzes the prison as a mirror of the State’s innermost nature: the site where its monopoly on legitimate violence manifests in its purest and most tangible form. From a moral philosophy perspective, the paper questions whether the violence that emerges within its walls is a systemic aberration or an almost inevitable consequence. Juxtaposed with this power is the radical vulnerability of the inmate, whose dignity is constantly threatened by depersonalization. The ethical challenge is therefore crucial: how to wield necessary authority without dehumanizing the individual? Arguing that dignity is not a given but a value that requires constant, active validation to be real, the essay calls for unceasing critical thought to prevent power from devolving into abuse, thereby keeping alive the ethical tension between authority and fragility.
