Through the analysis of publications and unpublished archival materials, the essay reveals the stories of four American scholars who, through their books and pioneering use of photography, disseminated a less stereotypical image of Italy. Turning their gaze to minor and southern Italian territories, the scholars contributed to conveying a multifaceted perception of Italy, beyond the established images of the Grand Tour, endowing the idea of the Italian landscape with variety and complexity
