This paper analyses prison as a total institution, highlighting the tension between its rehabilitative purpose and the reality of detention. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining sociology, law and criminology, it explores the dynamics of otherness that characterise the prisoner's experience, the loss of self and the relationship with the outside community. The text examines the role of the body, respect and emotional relationships in determining vulnerability, self-harm and suicide, as well as the mitigating effect of artistic and theatrical practices. The conclusions propose strategies for a punishment that goes beyond its punitive function, promoting the empowerment of individuals and society with a view to real reintegration.

Abstract
This paper analyses prison as a total institution, highlighting the tension between its rehabilitative purpose and the reality of detention. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining sociology, law and criminology, it explores the dynamics of otherness that characterise the prisoner's experience, the loss of self and the relationship with the outside community. The text examines the role of the body, respect and emotional relationships in determining vulnerability, self-harm and suicide, as well as the mitigating effect of artistic and theatrical practices. The conclusions propose strategies for a punishment that goes beyond its punitive function, promoting the empowerment of individuals and society with a view to real reintegration.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
