This article examines the transformation of the agrarian landscape of Catina, in eastern Sicily, between the Roman Republic and the Imperial period. Through a historical-topographical and archaeological approach, it investigates changes in rural settlement, land use and the organisation of agricultural production in one of Sicily’s most significant territorial contexts. The case study highlights the dynamic nature of the Catina countryside, moving beyond the traditional image of Sicily as a merely grain-producing province. By analysing settlement patterns, environmental conditions and the relationship between city, countryside and resources, the contribution places Catina within broader debates on Roman rural landscapes, imperial economies and the long-term resilience of Mediterranean agrarian systems.

Abstract
This article examines the transformation of the agrarian landscape of Catina, in eastern Sicily, between the Roman Republic and the Imperial period. Through a historical-topographical and archaeological approach, it investigates changes in rural settlement, land use and the organisation of agricultural production in one of Sicily’s most significant territorial contexts. The case study highlights the dynamic nature of the Catina countryside, moving beyond the traditional image of Sicily as a merely grain-producing province. By analysing settlement patterns, environmental conditions and the relationship between city, countryside and resources, the contribution places Catina within broader debates on Roman rural landscapes, imperial economies and the long-term resilience of Mediterranean agrarian systems.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
