This article offers the first comprehensive investigation of the systematic lack of rhyme in medieval Romance lyric poetry. Although this phenomenon is extremely rare, since unrhymed verses are normally absent from the genre, some examples can indeed be found in the troubadour corpus. This device becomes much more frequent in poetic traditions derived from the Occitan one, where it assumes different functions that are examined in detail.
