The energy renovation of buildings is an EU priority for the 2050 climate neutrality. Existing buildings also exhibit seismic vulnerability leading to social and economic losses due to building damage/collapse during an earthquake. An integrated retrofit to make buildings safe and sustainable is essential, along with the development of multi-performance methodologies to assess the enhanced seismic and energy performance. The Sustainable Structural Design (SSD) methodology, developed within the Joint Research Centre (JRC) activity SAFESUST (SAFEty and SUSTainability), is noteworthy to this goal. This paper presents the SSD methodology that integrates the seismic performance assessment of buildings with the energy and environmental ones in a life-cycle perspective to achieve a global assessment result in economic terms. As part of the JRC Pilot Project REEBUILD, the application of the SSD methodology to a public masonry building is described to assess its pre- and post-retrofit performances.
