Moving from the historically developed plurilingual roots of Austrian German, based on the ethnic and cultural plurality of the Austrian population, the study presented in this paper aims to identify the languages and varieties that character-ise the Linguistic Landscape of Vienna today: As the political and cultural heart of the country, the capital shows indeed a significant presence of plurilingualism. The analysis addresses the following questions: Which languages and varieties of (Austrian) German characterise the Linguistic Landscape of Vienna in selected districts? How do they manifest themselves in public and to what extent can one language or language variety be interpreted as dominant? How do specific linguistic and extra-linguistic factors relate to the place where they occur? Is it possible to identify a specific function that is determined or realised by the choice of variety? On the one hand, the results should help to describe the Linguistic Landscape of Vienna regarding its plurilingualism. On the other hand, they should form a basis for a future didactic implementation of Linguistic Landscape research within the framework of a didactics of German as a pluricentric language.
