In this article the authors critically examine their research experience on medical and nursing education and training at the university level. The aim is twofold: on the one hand, to highlight the main features of the educational pathways of future healthcare professionals and to identify potential gaps and critical issues; on the other, to demonstrate how the contribution of medical anthropology can foster a deeper understanding of these gaps and, on that basis, promote a transformative process aimed at the humanization of biomedicine and care. Drawing on research materials collected in both educational and clinical contexts, and by employing an ethnographic methodology applied to internship practice within hospital wards, the article critically engages with key aspects of the contemporary biomedical model. This approach enables the recontextualization of the illness experience within its historical, social, political, and cultural dimensions, while simultaneously fostering the professional and relational competencies of future healthcare practitioners.

Abstract
