Abstract

The complex under discussion consists of the fortified masseria, known as Masseria Cicella, and of Liàme (or also Lammie). Said works are a constant in the Apulian agrarian landscape of the Brindisi and Taranto countryside. The masserie, scattered among the olive groves, are fortified, as they are equipped with defensive architectural elements. Lammie, like Pajare and the better-known Trulli, are traditional rural constructions formerly used as agricultural storage and shelters for farmers, shepherds and animals. The evocative power of such rural architectures, made with the same stones obtained by tilling the land, lies in the continuity in the use of the material and the essentiality of the forms. The recovery of the masseria and lammie, within a broader context of the enhancement of historical-rural assets, allows the continuity and survival of a large part of the national architectural heritage that, if not properly restored, would result in the loss of the historical identity of the territories and a significant economic resource unique in the world. The recovery of rural architecture is crucial from several points of view, not only for the preservation of the centuries-old history on which today's society was formed, but also as an economic resource to foster socioeconomic development consistent with the various territories of reference. The project involves the prudent recovery of the complex while respecting the existing building typology without altering the original architectural composition. The succession of vaulted bodies will be respected in the adaptation to the new functions. Fundamental is the preservation of the star vaults, a unicum of the Salento territory, given by the union of elements of cross vaults and as many of sail vaults in respect of traditional solutions and techniques, in order not to contradict the aesthetic-formal unity of the ancient factory. The richness of the decorative apparatuses on the interior and exterior elevations is entrusted to the skillful use of local stone with which the crowning of the masonry was composed in notches and geometric motifs in relief. Central to the prudent recovery is the integration between the architecture and the nature of the places. The courtyards of which the masseria and the lammie ensembles are composed will be the spaces in which to experiment with such integration and in which the tree and shrub arrangements of Mediterranean species will humor the architectural elements of the rural buildings and build new "architectures of nature." The enhancement of the architecture and rural landscape of Archidamo III company is integrated with the sustainable agricultural production development of the olive supply chain, which has already won international recognition attesting to the high quality of the product. Archidamo III company pursues the goal of integrating the olive supply chain in the direction of environmental sustainability and strengthening the biodiversity of cultivars.
