The paper discusses the role of inclusive dwellings for inclusive living communities. At the light of vulnerability of contemporary society, and despite the global diffusion of the current interdependent critical phenomena, not everyone is equally at risk, since available social and economic resources and the qualitative performance of places and services, may improve or worse the population’s physical and mental health. In this challenging framework, it is paramount that people, especially fragile ones, are supported, also by the built environment, to fit the changes that these phenomena continue to generate. Inclusive design for emergent dwelling introduces an array of topics that are relevant for Inclusive Living Communities (ILCs), by focusing on how to conceive the emergent dwelling to be responsive to different human needs in a lifelong and multigenerational perspective and to assure a low environmental impact as well as “climate proof and pandemic proof” conditions. Three experimental applications of building re-functionalization for inclusive dwellings are also presented.
