This essay examines Johannes Althusius’ doctrines on covenant and natural right (jus communis). While assessing the operation of these concepts within the broader context of Althusius’ political model, the essay aims to shed light on a particular form of political theology: the “federal” one, which was spreading in Calvinist intellectual circles in early modern Europe.
