The paper addresses the problem of determining the parameters of the dynamic model of the synchronous machine, considering the unavailability of some measured data. The dynamic modeling of the synchronous machine based upon the introduction of the Canay reactance is recalled, which allows us to remove the hypothesis that the three mutual reactances between damper, field and armature are equal. In the paper it is proposed to characterize some unavailable quantities probabilistically, based on previous knowledge for similar machines or based on information inherent to the design of the machine or of similar machines, in order to be able to infer a probability density function for them. In particular, the paper aims to characterize with a normal distribution the ratio between the amplitude of the alternating component of the excitation current and that corresponding to the no-load operating condition, following a three-phase short circuit. The probability distributions of all other parameters can consequently be determined. On the basis of this probabilistic analysis, a simple procedure is tailored for deriving the interest parameters. The procedure is illustrated by reporting numerical applications to test cases, highlighting the simplicity of its application.
