The 19th-century layout of the Santa Maria del Pianto Cemetery can be seen as evolving from a site already consecrated for burial in preceding centuries, incorporating the ancient church of Santa Maria del Pianto. The present contribution is about this transformation, which took place under the guidance of architects Gaetano Genovese and Daniele de Luca.It brings together unpublished sources dealing with the establishment of the cemetery found in the Municipal Historical Archive in Naples, which in the 1990s took over the entire archive of the Real Stabilimento di Santa Maria Vertecoeli,the institution that had managed the cemetery until the cessation of its institutional activities in 1980.
