Forty years after the publication of the catalogue Idea as Model, edited by Kenneth Frampton and Silvia Kolbowski, we propose a critical reflection on models, open to comparison with both autonomy and heteronomic inflections, insights and oblique glances, in-depth analysis and semantic stratifications, yet presenting the history of its critical reception from a methodological point of view. In 1987 Vittorio Gregotti published Rassegna 32 - Maquette and in 2011 Anne Holtrop, Hans Teerds and Job Floris curated OASE 84, with the same title, up to 2020, when several journals have dealt with the theme of the model as a working tool for communication, prefiguration and analysis of architecture, such as Log 50 - Model Behavior. Our first issue intends to fit into this analytical line, affirming the problematic value of the model as a didactic tool, as medium and autonomous work. The intent is to delineate an updated account of different experiences that understand the model as the methodological foundation of architectural design pedagogies, and to articulate them thematically under three categories: the model as a processual tool; the model as the product of a design; the model as a performative device.
