By 2050, all European Union countries will have to achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions of 80% compared to 1990, while ensuring energy security and the competitiveness of the European economy as a whole. The goal of decarbonization is consistent with the effort required by the most developed economies in the framework of a global effort to mitigate climate change. The European Union, which has articulated policies in short and medium-term objectives, has fully shared the commitment by involving all the main sectors responsible for emissions. In order to effectively pursue the objectives, it is therefore necessary to define comprehensive measures that are reflected in national legislations and transparent strategies, implemented in cooperation with institutions, companies and civil society to find a democratic balance between opposing interests. In this framework, the contribution aims to analyse the progress of the European countries de-carbonization process with specific reference to the reduction of emissions, energy efficiency, the use of renewable sources and electric mobility.
