This work focuses on the elements of spoken language in a specific type of artistic text, namely comics; it originates from the consideration of the opportunity to posit a further dimension of variation, diatechnic variation, alongside – or below – diamesic variation. Several characteristics of spoken language are present in the language of comics, which tends to reproduce spontaneous speech within the constraints of that medium. Particular attention is given to the output of the early years of this art form (beginning of the 1900s), and to how the Fascist censorship of the late 1930s led to attempts to make comics autonomous from the American models, Italianising their structure and vocabulary. On the one hand, this process has favoured the development of a flourishing Italian school of comics; on the other hand, it could not entirely prevent the use in texts of structural elements which, over time and despite censorship, have brought them ever closer to real spoken language, many of whose distinguishing traits have been selected and reproduced. In this work, this distinctive text type is compared to the characteristics of spoken language which, despite intersecting diaphasic, diastratic, and sometimes also diatopic variation, are nevertheless regular and shared cross-linguistically. The comparison highlights how the structural characteristics of spontaneous spoken language are overall faithfully reproduced in the language of comics, obviously within the constraints of the diatechnic medium consisting of the panel and, above all, speech/thought balloons. Furthermore, as shown by the diachronic analysis of this artistic text, over time faithfulness to the characteristics of spoken language has significantly increased, culminating in present-day comics which present, in their panels, the typical traits of dialogic interaction.
