This paper discusses how humanists and antiquarians of several cities of southern Italy dealt with the rediscovery of local antiquities and in general of their ancient past, between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The main focus is on what was more characteristic of the method of these men of letters, especially in their approach to the massive literary and archaeological material connected with the Magna Graecia. This issue is discussed through two episodes connected with the discovery and interpretation of ancient ruins in two different cities of the Kingdom of Naples: Fondi and Lecce. The first case deals with the humanist Francesco Peto of Fondi; the second case with the humanist and physician Antonio de Ferraris Galateo, from the Salento region in southern Puglia.
