Although the Court of Cassation's role in providing the right answer as to the correct application of the law is usually in the spotlight, that Court also significally contributes to the development of the law in another way: by referring questions for a preliminary ruling to the European Court of Justice. The talk examines the Italian Court of Cassation's foremost preliminary references and the legal principles which the European Court of Justice developed in providing an answer thereto.
