Abstract

The industrial conversion, generated by changes in the production system, contributed to the creation of brownfield. In recent decades the phenomenon of urban sprawl affected the fragmentation of urban and rural areas. As a result, a mosaic of abandoned open spaces represents nowadays the emergent issue of “urban voids” or, more properly, of contemporary drosscape. The city has increasingly made up of “enclaves”, introverted and rigid areas enhancing territorial fragmentation and the interstitial urban space between the “fences” becomes the new wasting place of social and environmental degradation. The urban “voids” become places of real and perceived unsafety, public space loses its connective character converting itself into a place of social exclusion. Rehabilitation and re-use of urban spaces represent a means to develop new green grids aimed to environmental restoration and hydraulic risks management, and to rebuild new sociality. Green infrastructure design marks a strong point in the new urban narrative for the ecological city of future. The ecological planning, based on the creation of green infrastructures, could be the necessary path for the forthcoming urban planning in order to face the “new urban question” in which the growing social inequalities join the urgent environmental issues.
