Abstract

The area of Miseno offers a unique system of urbanized areas, impressive archeological findings and fascinating features of landscape which has brought about a close and sometimes even indissoluble relationship between the archeological sites and modern building. The widespread and imposing rests of the Greco-roman age, often still in part buried, need in fact an integrated cultural approach attentive to the peculiarities of the Phlegraean territory which is characterized by such delicate problems as the hydro-geological equilibrium, the presence of a still active volcanic system, an important industrial apparatus which is undergoing a deep crisis and a devastating building abusiveness which covers and often absorbs nearly all of the antic monuments, so impeding a large-scale excavation campaign. The Roman theatre of Miseno dates back to the end of the first century AD and was build according to a unique construction principle, with the cavea reclined against the tuff rock. Today, the lower semicircle and some of the radial compartments which open up from it, directed to the cavea are visible and in part (19 out of 25). The laser scanner point cloud data was also useful for defining correctly the system of entrances to the cavea, determining the position of the vomitoria and the stairs, excavated only in part, with the aim of determining a global system of internal pathways within the theatre.
