Abstract

Many are the definitions that are commonly taken today to describe the meaning of the transformations and the constant process of hybridization, that increasingly characterizes the historical urban settings. This scenario expands the field of representation research, especially for what concern the documentation of the built urban environment, in response to a cultural sensibility diffused thanks to the European legislation which directs the staff responsible for the creation of digital archives, to a larger necessity to compare , integrate and share different skills, both in general and in particular. It is presented an operative research on the historical center of Naples, part of goods protected by UNESCO , with reference to the Decumano Maggiore. The goal is to find a multi –scalar strategy to improve the accessibility and valorize the urban landscape keeping its historical characteristics. This led to the study of the relationship between urban, infrastructural, architectural, and social, cultural and tourist aspects specific to the site , a very example for the instances of a big range of different users for cultural sensitivity and with different needs, like elderly and disabled. Thanks to the study of the stratification and modification of the urban space through the time, it was possible to find the invariants and the values to be preserved, establishing a hierarchy among the various elements useful for the process of requalification. An articulated phase of survey allowed to find the reciprocal and spatial relationship between the elements that demarcate, define and characterize the specific urban context. It was also possible to highlight the presence and typologies of problems that led to the definition of different scales of action, according to the current law. The overall project addresses, with a unified view, aspects of functional adaptation and enlarged accessibility, of touristic, cultural and administration valorization . The right choice for the management of the acquired data was the definition of an informative system, together with a three-dimensional model, also to simulate the visual impact of the design assumptions. Make recognizable and easy to reach the routes, provide the historical center of more services and equipments, regulate the passages of vehicles, improve the accessibility to the architectural structures and archeological sites also by different categories of users, are just some of the actions presented for a valorizations of the project area, easy to achieve in a short, medium and long term. Conceived strategies, focused both on material and immaterial matters, according to scientific debate, are related to the development of new manners of visual, functional and economical definition in urban design.
