The Mediterranean agricultural landscape is characterized in many ways (natural, agricultural, historical, cultural and economic) by the presence of the olive trees. Geographers consider his own presence as a key element in the definition of the Mediterranean area. Due to its widespread dissemination, the cultivation of olive trees has given rise to various landscapes, each of which may be traceable to specific regions or territories. However, in recent years, the crisis that has hit the Italian olive oil industry has pushed, although in different ways, toward a disappearance of the olive trees from many areas. This study addresses the specific problem of ancient olive trees with a high landscape and nostalgic value but with a high risk of extinction. The Total Economic Value (TEV) of the “Saracen” olive trees of Chiaramonte Gulfi (Sicily), one of the ancient olive groves in Italy, has been estimated through Contingent Valuation. Unfortunately, the estimated value does not seem to be able to ensure the survival of this landscape, paving the way for some reflections on the conservation of ancient rural landscape.
