One of the factors of the increase of recent internal mobility in Italy largely due to the high increase of the foreign population. By using 2001 individual data we have defined groups of individuals who changed residence, on the basis of their characteristics: nationality, place of birth for the Italians, sex and age. For each group some indicators were calculated: rate of mobility, percentage of flows intraprovince, concentration of flows, dependence on metropolitan areas, percentage of flows between zones. A cluster analysis was applied to the factors extracted by the principal component analysis on the indicators and it resulted in six clusters. In 2001 the differences do not seem to be determined by demographic characteristics but by the origin of the different groups. The foreign population is characterized not only by the highest propensity to travel, but also by the greater concentration of destinations, a reduced dependence on metropolitan areas and a higher propensity of migration as origin and destination, in the north of Italy.
