In the last thirty years, in contrast to the common deprivation process that has been plaguing Western cities, Montreal has been working to improve its urban open spaces, with the purpose of preserving and promoting its environmental and constructive identity, creating a city distinguished by built environment development and heritage preservation. Squares, roads, widenings, and gardens have provided a sort of texture around which the city grows. Such things can therefore be examined as remarkable indicators of the esprit du lieu, markers of the sedimentation processes that give rise to communities’ experiences, languages, and traditions.

Abstract

In the last thirty years, in contrast to the common deprivation process that has been plaguing Western cities, Montreal has been working to improve its urban open spaces, with the purpose of preserving and promoting its environmental and constructive identity, creating a city distinguished by built environment development and heritage preservation. Squares, roads, widenings, and gardens have provided a sort of texture around which the city grows. Such things can therefore be examined as remarkable indicators of the esprit du lieu, markers of the sedimentation processes that give rise to communities’ experiences, languages, and traditions.
