The proposed methodology, based on a study by Hudson (1992), defines the Critical Index (CI) as a vulnerability value of an urban drainage system. This parameter can be used for the optimisation of sewer maintenance and rehabilitation. The procedure included the choice of a number of variables that are significant in the assessment of sewer failure risk, the assignment of a code to each variable to represent the sewer condition, the analysis and the evaluation of the interaction between the considered variables and the final analysis of the critical index corresponding to an urban sewer network. The procedure has been accomplished for the case of the combined sewer system of Naples, Italy, proving that this methodology could be useful in the planning of sewer maintenance and rehabilitation.

Abstract
