A general overview on the basic concepts that drive the upgrade of structures located in seismic regions is provided; methods for improving their seismic performance or reducing the seismic demand are outlined. The discussion focuses on opportunities and reasons for using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) materials in the strengthening of both reinforced concrete (RC) and masonry structures. Possible local (i.e., columns, piers, beam-column joints) and global (i.e., frames and walls) applications are presented along with the most relevant conducted studies. Advantages of techniques utilizing FRP composites for the seismic upgrade of structures are summarized limitations and needs to be solved and analyzed by future research are indicated.
